Project
Richmond Hill Parks Signage Manual
Size
sq. ft.
Scope
Wayfinding & Donor Recognition
Location
Richmond Hill, ON
Year Completed
2020

The
Goal

Over the past three decades, Richmond Hill has been successful in acquiring an exceptional park system well-suited to the town’s suburban landscape. As parks represent a critical piece of Richmond Hill’s physical environment, a clear sense of how the park system will need to evolve in the face of growth is essential. Through an initial park evaluation, it was determined that a Parks Signage Standards Manual was needed to bring consistency to the City’s parks signage system and to better reflect the character of the City’s parks.

The
Design

To build the Signage Manual, Reich&Petch conducted a rigorous site analysis of exemplar park types to determine the suite of sign types the City would require. The team designed the signs with a visual language that would reflect the character of the City’s parks and its community. The design highlights the rolling hills that the City is known for, using a distinctive graphic motif accented with a band of natural wood. This contemporary system is designed for longevity, with durable materials and sturdy construction to meet the rigors of the Park environment. The Signage Manual includes strategies for integrating the City’s Parks Regulations neatly, consistently and efficiently.

The
Result

The final Signage Manual is a comprehensive manual for the City of Richmond Hill’s park sign system. It includes strategies for governance, outlines graphic elements, details sign types, and provides planning elements such as planning principles, where to locate signs, sign selection, and sign messaging. Through proper use of this manual, Richmond Hill’s Park Signs will promote and support the City of Richmond Hill’s brand image, secure a sense of community, establish a high standard for quality of design and create a uniform sign system that communicates information effectively and efficiently.
