The

In 2012, The City of Toronto embarked on an updated Interpretive and Educational Programming Plan for the Don Valley Brick Works Park, initiated by the desire for a unique identity and branding, as well as a fresh interpretive program including website content, signage, brochures, trail maps, multimedia applications, and docent-ambassador programming.

The
Design

The design/build team of R&P and Holman Exhibits, worked with the City of Toronto to design an interpretive signage system for the trails at Don Valley Brick Works. The sign system was built using bands of tinted concrete, representing core drill samples. Each coloured band symbolizes a segment of the site’s history: the site’s past as a brick factory, the site’s current use as a natural habitat, and the promising future for the site. Graphics supplemented the structural design through coordinated colours while ensuring a clean, contemporary look and feel. R&P was also responsible for analyzing the trail system in conjunction with the interpretive planner and the client to determine the best locations for the interpretive signage and interactives.

  • [R&P's] insight and experience was valuable to the creative and production process, and the project was well received by Staff, Officials and the Public as a whole. Cheryl Post, Natural Environment Specialist, City of Toronto

Brochure
Design

R&P also designed the visitor brochure, park map, and informational handout to supplement the interpretive signage. The brochure provides an overview to the historical site, describes the environmental initiatives of the City, and highlights key attractions at the park.
