Grimsby Art Gallery and Library is a facility that provides general library functions, research facilities, state-of-the-art collections, storage and exhibitions facilities. The challenge was to create a Class A gallery facility with shared multiuse facilities within a limited site and modest budget.
Designed in association with Shore Tilbe Irwin and Partners Architects, the Gallery and Library share many facilities and amenities and provide a variety of interesting interior and exterior spaces. The shared spaces, carefully designed, help maximize the budget provided. The added amenity of the historic Carnegie Library provides a new cultural core for the town in close proximity to the centre. A close interactive process with stakeholders provides a high quantity flexible solution for a wide range of community activities and an excellent marriage of uses.
The (former) gallery space, located in the basement of the Grimsby Public Library was, however, far below acceptable gallery standards…The new building is a showpiece for the town of Grimsby.

Supplementing a beloved local institution is a delicate process, and one that must be done with the buy-in of local stakeholders. Providing increased and improved space to accommodate the services that the local resource is known and loved for is a delicate balance. This is especially true when combining two spaces with sometimes opposing needs. Public programming space and collections security are of course both important to the Grimsby Art Gallery and Library and both find a good fit in the new space.
