The
Goal

The London Children’s Museum embarked on a bold, strategic move to create a world-class educational and cultural destination at its new home in the historic Kellogg’s cereal factory. The museum wanted new experiences that encourage visitors to climb, explore, touch, create and get messy. With the expertise of R&P and our design associate, Skolnick Architecture and Design, we delivered seven new immersive exhibits that provided a range of experiences suitable for many ages. The new hallmark experience for London, Ontario combines imaginative play with delightful design creating an experience that carried forward popular nostalgic exhibits from the previous museum but reimagined with new twists, inviting visitors to create new memories.

The
Design

The new galleries explore different scenic settings taking inspiration from London and the surrounding region. This includes familiar places like forests, towns, farms, rivers and factories but also includes exciting locations like caves, paleo dig sites, and even a spaceship! The overall design intentionally blurs the lines between learning and playing encouraging children to explore and discover the exhibits.

For example, Branching Out encourages children to climb up a two-storey tree-house and and cross over one of three rope bridges to reach 20ft high platforms. While the Stream water table invites them to explore principles of water with delightful interactives. The scenic play environments encourage role-playing and exploration with each space uniquely designed to promote fine and gross motor skills, creativity, curiosity, multi-generational engagement and fun.

  • Reich & Petch have done an incredible job...this team has taken our museum master plan and made it a reality. They have really understood the community's dream for this space and infused every single detail with creativity, whimsy, and innovation.London Children's Museum

The
Result

The new London Children’s Museum is bright, colorful, and full of life, ready to host kids of all ages for many years to come. Since opening the museum has far exceeded their expectations welcoming 50,000 visitors in the first 3 months since opening.
