The
Design

The Expansion and Mid-Life Refit project for the Canadian Chancery involved additions and alterations to the existing complex within the Diplomatic Quarters in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, originally constructed in the mid-1980s. The expansion and re-fit accommodate Canada’s expanding services in the Middle East and provide a new look and environment for both staff and guests. With a renovation of this size on a building of this age, updated codes, standards, and technology needed to be addressed, including updated Canadian workplace building standards applied to an international location.

The addition and renovations were thoughtfully integrated into the original 1980s architecture, ultimately revitalizing an aging building for the modern world. The revitalized Chancery is a pleasant and bright work environment that features modern décor and complies with current Canadian health and safety standards. The renovated atrium – a central area that covers 295 square meters – is the perfect place for welcoming employees, partners, and contributors, as well as holding cultural celebrations and events.

As an occupied and active site, site restrictions and the scope of renovations required a total staff relocation to temporary accommodations while the renovations were completed. The staffing and department relationships were also adjusted within the new office environment. Updated mechanical and electrical systems brought staff comfort levels and office IT to Canadian Government standard.

The renovation was also an opportunity to refurbish and modernize the Chancery, parts of the Official Residence, exterior gardens and courtyards, and the staff recreation areas including a tennis court, pool, gymnasium, and lounge.
