The
Goal

RAMWC’s mandate was to create a signature building and museum to inspire, educate and entertain. Beginning in 2006, R&P began a long relationship with the Museum starting with the development of the preliminary building and exhibits conceptual approach and a business plan. As sites were identified, R&P worked with the Museum to refine the concepts and create a facility plan. In 2018, R&P lead an architectural team, collaborating with local architects Architecture 49, to develop the building design. As the building developed, R&P created the exhibit interpretive plan and designed the new exhibit installations.

  • The R&P team has done a fantastic job. We are singing your praises. Our major sponsor was impressed and excited about the concept. You have been wonderful to work with.Shirley Render, Executive Director, Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada

The
Design

Set on a prominent site on the Winnipeg Richardson International Airport, the building has an aerodynamic façade inspired an aircraft wing. Inside, the Museum focuses on compelling stories of the adventure, innovation, and legacy of Western and Northern aviation heritage through beautifully restored aircraft, complemented by engaging environmental vignettes, large format graphics, lighting, and context setting. The exhibits are highly flexible and include Indigenous messaging and STEM concepts about the science of flight that connect with the second level education center and hands-on programming space. Interactives include touchable objects such as control panels, ejector seats, and PA systems, and opportunities to climb onboard aircrafts.

The
Result

Through this project, the Museum re-established their commitment to the National Initiative of Truth and Reconciliation and involved Indigenous Curator, Dr. Niigaan Sinclair to help lead collaboration with local Indigenous communities. The resulting exhibits are meaningful and incorporate First Nations stories throughout. They have a design look and feel that is current, contemporary, and highly flexible for future change with the environments around every aircraft creating a stronger, more memorable visitor experience for all, rich with context and engagement.

Wayfinding
and Donor Recognition

Inspired by the circular elements found within the Royal Aviation Museum’s new branding standards, the wayfinding design uses circular panels to create a visually impactful and modern signage family. Working with the versatile layout of the main gallery space, interchangeable specialty signage was created to be removed and placed where needed on any of the aircraft barriers. The signage uses RAMWC’s branding yellow and a high contrasting dark charcoal gray to make them AODA compliant and to create a sophisticated design that draws the eyes of visitors without overwhelming their experience. Donor signage was also made in the same colour scheme but in a rectangular design to differentiate them from the wayfinding and exhibit signage while highlighting families and companies that contributed to the making of the space.
