The
Goal

Over recent years, Sporting Life, Canada’s premier sports and fashion lifestyle retailer has opened new locations across Canada. R&P is thrilled to continue the decades-long relationship with Sporting Life as architects for their nationwide retail roll-out program and designers of their new signature look. The design of the stores reflects a sophisticated, active and aspirational outdoor luxury lifestyle resonating with the targeted Sporting Life customer.

The
Design

As they enter the store, customers are greeted by large, light-filled spaces that are at once timeless and contemporary yet rustic and distinctly Canadian. Natural materials, tones, and motifs are mixed with clean lines and contemporary design. The design theme is inspired by nature and crafted with an elemental modern aesthetic. A lodge-like seating area with a stone fireplace is mixed amongst the clothing displays. Luxurious finishes are used throughout to appropriately represent the premium retailer.

At Sporting Life Yorkdale, an immense, double-height foyer creates a grand entrance unlike any other store in the mall. A spectacular and whimsical art installation floats overhead: a massive, suspended custom tree installation hovers above, while a large traditional “Yurt” serves as a lounge-like space.

On-trend footwear is emphasized with individually designed men’s, women’s, and youth footwear boutiques, as well as an exciting new Sneaker Boutique. The entire experience is carefully considered, from fixtures, to finishes, to the oversized fireplace.

R&P’s work included the full 46,000 sf architectural fitout for this two-level store interior with custom designed double height entrance, glass elevator, ballustrades, steel stairs and bespoke shop-fitting.

The
Result

“Over the years Sporting Life has evolved into a lifestyle brand from its origins as a purveyour of sports equipment, by pushing into fashion-forward categories that pit it squarely against the likes of Nordstrom and Harry Rosen.” – BNN Bloomberg

Strategically targeting a resilient customer demographic the design is inspired by an upscale outdoor Canadian design aesthetic that has been key to creating a unique and successful expression of the brand identity and expansion of the business.
