Upper Canada Village Discovery Centre

Overview

The Discovery Centre is the gateway into Upper Canada Village, a historic 19th century village and living history site. The architectural scope encompasses a specially themed lobby/queuing area, ticketing, exhibits, café, retail shop and event space.

Details

Client
St. Lawrence Parks Commission
Project
Upper Canada Village Discovery Centre & Crysler Heritage Park
Size
8,000 sq. ft.
Scope
Architecture & Interior Design
Location
Morrisburg, ON, CA
Year Completed
1970

Impact

Increase in revenues
16.5%
Ontario Government Investment
$13 million

The
Goal

Upper Canada Village sought the addition of a new Discovery Centre to their largely outdoor living history experience that would include exhibits and much needed indoor visitor services. This addition will help extend the tourist season and attract a new audience to this recreated 1860s site. As the first non-heritage building built at this living history site, it was imperative that the architecture respected the visual integrity of the adjacent heritage buildings but not replicate a historical construction.

The
Design

R&P collaborated with NORR Architects to design the new Discovery Centre for Upper Canada Village. The new post-and-beam center was designed as an extension to the existing Village Store. To complement the red brick Victorian architecture of the store, the new extension used modern standing seam metal roofing, dark horizontal wood siding and rich wood accents that would meet modern environmental efficiency standards and give it a contemporary aesthetic while still referencing rural Ontario buildings. A large feature window provides an opportunity to showcase special exhibits and attract passersby. Inside, visitors are welcomed with large spacious volumes and heavy timber interiors reminiscent of a lofty barn interior which provides ample hanging and display options for artifacts and props. On the ground level, display areas for platforms, casework and artifacts enrich the space with the Village experience beyond. The building was designed to enhance the visitor experience with a spacious entry hall functioning as a gathering and event space providing access to ticketing, exhibits, amenities, a retail shop, and food services.

  • We found the R&P team to be extremely knowledgeable in the heritage sector, with a solid, international portfolio of previous work of various sizes and scales.Bryan J. Mercer, Director of Marketing, St. Lawrence Parks Commission

The
Result

The new massive-timber and steel framed, open-concept Discovery Centre at Upper Canada Village beautifully integrates into the 19th Century Village while including important amenities that enrich the visitor experience at the beginning, middle, and end of their visit. The completed building, which has achieved LEED Silver ranking, was executed on time and on budget, opening to enthusiastic press, public, and government review. In addition to the Architectural scope, Reich&Petch completed the master plan, exhibits, and retail renovation.
