The Hong Kong Heritage Museum is a new purpose-built museum dedicated to the history, popular culture, fine art, and contemporary art of Hong Kong. The museum is complex, comprised of a combination of permanent galleries and collections together with temporary exhibition galleries that are meant to host rotating exhibits. R&P designed six permanent and six temporary galleries at the Museum. The cultural and natural history of the New Territories is highlighted along with the art and history of China, its decorative arts tradition and future directions. Exhibit media include artifacts in context, multimedia, and a wide range of interactive media. Exhibits are developed in three languages.
- Anyone who thinks putting a museum together is just a matter of arranging a few exhibits in a hall would be surprised at how much forethought goes into such a project.South China Morning Post
A chronological series of galleries presents treasures from the history of Chinese art. A series of thematic and comprehensive galleries showcase various topics such as Tibetan painting, jade, furniture-making, and traditional domestic interiors. In addition, a reading room is furnished with museum-quality late nineteenth century furniture produced in Hong Kong, demonstrating cross cultural influences that synthesize western and eastern decorative motifs. The gallery design and graphics were inspired by traditional motifs in Chinese architecture and the visual arts, but are presented in a contemporary manner. Cases and exhibit systems were developed for the Museum to the highest conservation standards and detailed to allow the curators themselves to rotate collections.
